About the Pre-Kindergarten Program

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has 59 Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K classes with addition classes at Coastal Empire Montesori. The Pre-Kindergarten program provides services to all age eligible four year old children residing in Chatham County. Our program provides a full day (6.5 hours) of appropriate instructional services to students for 180 days per year.

Our school system is guided by the following beliefs:
  • All children can learn.
  • Every child must learn more than what he/she is learning.

With these beliefs in mind our Pre-Kindergarten Program follows the goals set forth by the system's benchmark for student achievement as we prepare our students for transition kindergarten.

All of our classes use the High Scope Curriculum, with the exception of our charter schools (Charles Ellis and Coastal Empire Montessori) that use the Montessori Curriculum. All teachers are certified with at least a four-year degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education. Teachers provide instructional activities and learning experiences in the areas of language/literacy, math, art, science, social studies and creative expressions. There is a minimum of 5.0 hours of instruction per day. The remaining hours (1.5) of the instructional day includes rest/nap, meals and outside play. Field trips are an integral part of the Pre-K experience.

A maximum of twenty (20) students receive services in each class. More information about the Georgia Lottery funded Pre-kindergarten Program can be obtained by going to www.decal.ga.gov.

    Important Information about the program:
  • Funding from the State, pending approval, allows the district to provide a limited number of Pre-Kindergarten classes each year.
  • The program is full day. It is important to check with the individual school for the starting and ending times.
  • Transportation will be provided to children who are on the existing bus routes for each elementary school. No transportation is provided to Windsor High or Woodville-Tompkins.
  • Before and after- school programs are provided at the elementary school sites for a fee. The Pre-Kindergarten Program in our school district is housed various school sites. These sites include elementary, high and alternative school settings.

If additional information about our Pre-Kindergarten is needed, please call LaWanda Ransom, Project Director at (912) 395-1154 or (912) 395-5635.
