Announcements: SCCPSS Partners with Communities in Schools to Support Students Affected by Hurricane Matthew

Title

SCCPSS Partners with Communities in Schools to Support Students Affected by Hurricane Matthew

Body

Members of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and Communities in Schools (CIS) representatives partnered to distribute donations for students and families who were impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

Dr. Quentina Miller-Fields, Dr. Gequetta Jenkins, and their teams were on hand to organize the project. Catalina Garcia-Quick, CIS Executive Director, was also in attendance as affairs were in order for our students. Students from Woodville Tompkins High School, Hesse K-8 School, and Jenkins High School volunteered to set up the different areas for donations.

SCCPSS is working diligently to meet the needs of students, families, and staff affected by Hurricane Matthew. This initiative will begin by assisting those from the Westlake Apartment Community. The district has implemented the following steps to address the many needs of those families:

1. Principals of designated schools have been given an exhaustive list of those students that reside in the Westlake Apartment community.

2. School Social Workers will be given referrals to help locate students who have not returned to school; assess the needs of students and families; and assist schools with identifying families that may be classified as homeless under the *McKinney Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act.

**Those families that are identified as homeless under the McKinney Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act should contact Sharon Hill at 912-395-1092. Ms. Hill will provide verification of homelessness and provide other resources such as uniforms, supplies, and limited Chatham Area Transit bus tickets.

Families with students from the Westlake Apartments who attend the designated schools will be given first priority to receive vouchers for school uniforms and other supplies made available through a partnership with CIS. School social workers, guidance counselors, and nurses will be onsite at the designated schools to assist with the distribution of supplies to families. They will also assist with any other student/family concerns.
