Massie Heritage Center Opens Exhibit on City’s African American Education History

Body

On February 23rd, The Massie Heritage Center opened an exhibit called Enslavement to Emancipation: the Struggle for Education. The exhibit traces Savannah’s African American education history from nineteenth century clandestine schools to the early sixties when schools were integrated.

The opening was followed by a presentation from Chief Ulysses Bryant. Chief Bryant was one of the students who integrated Savannah High School in 1963 and later served as SCCPSS Chief of Police. Chief Bryant discussed his role in desegregating Savannah’s schools.

According to Dr. Ann Levett, Deputy Superintendent Chief of Academic Affairs, “Efforts for the exhibit began with the assistance of a few committed souls to broaden the outreach of Massie in our community.” After a year of those efforts, the exhibit opened to a packed house.

Dr. Levett also shared that most of the resources were discovered after reviewing findings in the basement at 208 Bull Street nearly two years ago. She went on to say, “We produced this exhibit for our students and community and we are proud of it.”

Massie Heritage Center is a Museum of Savannah’s history and architecture, providing educational opportunities for school children and the public at large.
