Title

Savannah-Chatham Schools Awarded $1.4 Million in 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant Funding

Body

The Georgia Department of Education has announced that the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has been awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.  SCCPSS will receive $1.4 million to fund after-school programs throughout the district. Programs at nine schools - Hodge, Gould, Gadsden, Butler, Juliette Low, East Broad, Myers, Derenne and Groves will benefit.

Across the state of Georgia, school districts and nonprofits provide extended day programs through the 21st Century CLC program.  The funding will allow the district to continue to provide quality academic and enrichment opportunities focused on extending the learning day for students who can benefit from additional learning support and academic enrichment.  Students can receive assistance to meet or exceed state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math.

The program offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that complement their regular academic programs.  Students attending the after-school programs are engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM), Character Education, Health and Fitness, Educational Field Trips and Community Service Projects.  In addition to providing after school support during the school year, the grant also provides a four-week summer program for students.
