Announcements: Superintendent Sworn in as Honorary 165th Airlift Wing Commander at Military Conference

Title

Superintendent Sworn in as Honorary 165th Airlift Wing Commander at Military Conference

Body

The SCCPSS hosted “Superintendent’s Conference on Serving Military Connected Families” brought together school district employees and military personnel to discuss ways in which the school system can support our military families.  The Conference was held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Coastal Georgia Center and included a special honor for the Superintendent when leaders of the 165th Airlift Wing held a ceremony to have her sworn in as an Honorary Commander of the unit.

The theme of the Superintendent’s Military Conference was “Making a Positive Impact on our Military-Connected Families.” Dr. Levett says there are important reasons to learn more about ways in which the school district can support our military families, “Military-connected children and families (Active Duty, Veterans, National Guard, and Reserves) are a growing percentage of Georgia’s communities; more veterans are choosing to retire here too!  Their unique strengths and resilience, as well as risks and challenges are often overlooked or misunderstood, such as the impact of transitions, traumatic stress, or injuries on family life. Become informed about the best ways to identify, engage with, and meet the needs of those military-connected students and their families.”

District Administrators, Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, and School Psychologists had the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker Lt. Col Kenneth Dwyer, Garrison Commander at Hunter Army Airfield about the challenges facing our military families and how we as a school system can best support them. Conference sessions included “Community Collaborations Supporting Military Families,” “School Supports for Military Students,” and “Crisis Management in Schools”.
