Announcements: SCCPSS Awarded $1.75 Million Grant for 21st Century Community Learning Centers

Title

SCCPSS Awarded $1.75 Million Grant for 21st Century Community Learning Centers

Body

The Georgia Department of Education announced that Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has been awarded a new 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant.  Over the next five years, SCCPSS will receive $1.75 million to fund after-school programs at Hodge Elementary and Gould Elementary.  The new grant was submitted in partnership with the YMCA of Coastal Georgia.

Across the state of Georgia, school districts and nonprofits competed for funding for FY16 requests for proposals (RFP).  Only 12 applications were selected to receive funding.  The new funding will allow the District to continue to provide quality academic and enrichment opportunities for students who can benefit from additional learning support and academic enrichment.  The federally funded program provides funds to states, which in turn conducts a competitive grant process.

The program offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that complement their regular academic programs. Students attending the afterschool program receive assistance to meet or exceed state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math.   Students are engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM), Character Education, Health and Fitness, Educational Field Trips and Community Service Projects.  In addition to providing after school support during the school year, the grant also provides a four-week summer program for students as well as various parent activities.

Sixteen schools will continue to offer after-school programs funded through previously awarded 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant.
