Announcements: The SCCPSS 21st Century Community Learning Centers hosted “Lights On Afterschool” 2015 at Matilda Beasley Park

Title

The SCCPSS 21st Century Community Learning Centers hosted “Lights On Afterschool” 2015 at Matilda Beasley Park

Body

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates great awareness for the value of afterschool programs for our youth.

The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things such as science, community service, robotics, poetry, and so much more. The events send a powerful message that showcase quality afterschool programs and their benefit in education.  More information can be found by visiting www.afterschoolalliance.org.

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School 21st Century Community Learning Centers hosted this year’s event on October 22nd at the Matilda Beasley Park. As a leader in providing youth with an enriching and rewarding afterschool environment, the 21st CCLC provides expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children across the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math. In addition, 21st CCLC programs provide youth development activities, behavior intervention programs, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music and recreation programs, counseling and character education to enhance the academic components of the program.

Many students, parents, community members and SCCPSS school leadership united for the Lights On Afterschool event that provided information about afterschool programs with lots of fun activities for students and parents alike.

Mayor Edna Jackson along with the Aldermen of the City of Savannah presented a Proclamation to Mr. Aldric Dekle, Director of SCCPSS 21st Century, and Compensatory Programs. Participation in Lights on Afterschool event provides an opportunity to see first-hand how these programs are positively affecting our community.
