Title

SCCPSS Announces Official Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Partnership with JDRF and Memorial Health

Body

On Monday, November 16, 2015, SCCPSS officials gathered with representatives of Memorial Health and Beach High students from the Medical and Allied Health Professions Small Learning Community for a press conference to kick off Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Week.

November has been designated as American Diabetes Month and Chatham County has issued a proclamation, declaring today, November 16th, Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Day. SCCPSS is partnering with Memorial Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) to bring awareness to Type 1 diabetes in the community.

Each year approximately 500 children in Georgia are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and 10 percent of all diagnoses are in the Savannah area. Currently 400 students within the school district have Type 1 diabetes. Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Ann Levett spoke about the importance of promoting awareness in Chatham County schools as well as the rate of Type 1 diabetes in the district.

Dr. Mary Chatman, Memorial’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, provided insight on how this disease can impair children from day to day; she is the parent of a child who lives with Type 1 diabetes herself.

Trey Moore, JDRF’s executive director, shared thanks to SCCPSS and Memorial Health’s president and CEO Maggie Gill for their support. The activities for the week will include a daily morning announcement made by staff or students with a fact about the disease, Type 1 diabetes awareness PSA competition (winner to be announced at the Jan. 9th Student Success Expo at the Savannah Mall), and a dress down day for students and staff.

There will also be a JDRF walk later in the school year sponsored by Family Academy Strategy Times/Career Technical Student Organization (FAST/CTSO).
