What is the Criteria for Gifted Education Placement?

SSCPSS Implementation of State Board of Education Rule 160-4-2-.38 

·         Students must be enrolled in the Savannah-Chatham Public Schools to be tested for the SCCPSS Gifted Program.

·         The student must qualify in three of the four categories.

·         Information will be gathered in each of the four categories.

·         Any piece of information used to establish eligibility shall be current within two years.

·         Data gathered and analyzed by a source outside the school system shall be used only in the mental ability or achievement categories.

·         Any data used in one area to establish a student’s eligibility shall not be used in any other category. 

 

Category One: Mental Ability SCCPSS Ability Assessment

 K – 12,  > 96th percentile composite or appropriate component scores on a nationally normed mental ability test

    Alternative:

    • K-2,  99th percentile composite score on a nationally normed mental ability test
    • 3-12,  > 96th percentile composite score on a nationally normed mental ability test

 

Cognitive Abilities Test

Category Two:  Achievement

SCCPSS Achievement Assessment

K-12,  > 90th percentile total reading, total math or complete battery on a nationally normed achievement test

 

Grades K-8:  NWEA MAP Math and Reading

Grades 9-12: ITBS

Category Three: Creativity

SCCPSS Creativity Assessment

K-12,   90th percentile composite score nationally normed test of creative thinking

OR

6-12, 90th percentile creativity score on a gifted evaluation scale, only if grade point average was the criteria for eligibility in motivation .

 

Alternative:

Superior product/performance with a score of > 90 on a scale of 1-100, as evaluated by a panel of three or more qualified evaluators, indicated by K-12 winner of a regional level or higher competition.

Gifted Evaluation Scale Third Edition (6-12) if gpa used as motivation criteria

Category Four: Motivation

SCCPSS Motivation Assessment

K-5,  > 90th percentile on a standardized motivational characteristics rating scale

 

6-12>  90%  percentile grade point average based on eight consecutive marking periods

Grades K-5: Gifted Rating Scale

 

Grades 6-12: Grade Point Average
