The Great Pyramid of Giza

The Pyramid of Giza is best saved from crumbing down. It is the only of the seven wonders to stay in one piece into the modern times.† The pyramid of Giza is the oldest wonder. It was built out of 2,300,000 limestone blocks in the lower parts of Egypt. The Egyptians built 10 pyramids to honor the kings. The biggest pyramid was the Great Pyramid of Giza, which holds the leader other known as the Pharaoh. It was a tomb or burial place for kings. This wonder was built as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu. And it was built in 2600 .B.C. to 2500.B.C. It was the largest pyramid in Egypt. The Pyramid of Giza was called the Great Pyramid because it was so big it could be seen from the moon! Giza stays at 68į F. People think the Pyramid of Giza might weigh 5.9 tons.

 

 

 

 

 

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The Hanging Babylon Gardens were built by king Nebuchadnezzar 2 for one of his wives from the mountains The Babylon gardens terrace 400 feet square and 75 feet tall. The king hoped his wife would feel at home. When he built it he only grew plants and flowers. He ruled Babylon from 605 to 562 B.C.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia

The statue of Zeus at Olympia is located at Olympia, Greece. Zeus was the king of the gods and goddesses.† Phidias created the statue in 435 B.C. It is made of ivory and looked like a king in a golden robe. It was made for the Olympics. Itís the fourth oldest wonder and itís 40 feet high.† It is also the smallest wonder. Zeusí head nearly brushed the ceiling. It is one of the most famous statues in Ancient Greece. Zeusí robe and ornaments were made out of gold.† His flesh was made of ivory.† Zeus held an eagle in his left hand.† His messenger, Nike, was in his right hand.† Nike stands for victory in Greece.† Zeus wore a wreath around his head.† He could change his shape.† If he was mad,† he would throw lightning bolts to the ground.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

The Temple of Artemis was built at about 550 B.C. in Ephesus, Greece. It was dedicated to Artemis, the Greek God of hunting and childbirth. It was designed by Chersiphron and his son, Metegenes. It was 40 feet high. It was burned down in 356 B.C. Another one like it was built. The second one was burned by Goths in 262 A.D.† Only the parts of the second temple remain.

The Colossus of Rhodes

Rhodes is located in southeastern Greece, in the Aegean Sea near Turkey. The Colossus of Rhodes was 120 ft. tall, high as the Statue of Liberty! It was huge and bronze. It was near the harbor of Rhodes. It honored the sun god, Helios. It is the sixth oldest wonder. It was built by Chares in 280 B.C. Like the statue of Liberty, the Colossus was built as a celebration of freedom. The Colossus was destroyed by an earthquake.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Lighthouse of Alexandria

Did you know that the lighthouse of Alexandria is in Egypt?† The lighthouse of Alexandria was built on an island named Alexandria. Itís huge. The lighthouse was over 400 feet tall. It was built from 283 to 243 BC. It was finished during the reign of Ptolemy. It was built to help the sailors back to the harbor. The fire was used as light. Itís different from normal lighthouses. The lighthouse bottom was square, the middle 8 sided, and the top circular. It was the first important lighthouse. It became so famous that the word pharos meant the word lighthouse. It was also called the Pharos of Alexandria. It was built by the ancient Egyptians. It was very massive. But donít forget the Lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
