Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn in a printed application? Printed applications will be available at Choice Program sites; however, we strongly encourage applicants to use the online process.  All printed applications must be turned in at the Office of College & Career Readiness, 402 Market Street, Savannah 31408.

If I am enrolled in a choice program and plan to return to the same program at the same school do I need to reapply each year? No, enrollment remains through the highest grade offered for that program at the same school.

If I already attend a school that has a Choice Program but I am not enrolled in the choice program, do I have to apply for the choice program they offer? Yes and the child must meet the established criteria for that choice program.

What programs require an audition or artistic review? Esther F. Garrison School for the Arts, grades 6-8 and Savannah Arts Academy will require an audition and/or artistic review process.

If I want to enroll in the Microsoft IT Academy at my high school, do I need to apply at student registration? No, this program is integrated into the Business Education program at each school.

What happens if there are more applicants than space available for a non-audition program? Those students who meet the Choice Program criteria but are not selected through the Choice Program lottery, will be placed on the waitlist.

How long after the lottery will parents be notified of their child’s status?  What happens after the lottery? Parents will be notified through email of Choice Program lottery results on March 6, 2018.  If no email address was provided, a letter will be mailed to the address provided on March 6, 2018.

Is there an appeal process?  Yes.  Parents who believe their child was not allowed an equitable opportunity to a Choice Program during the audition or eligibility process as a result of a technical problem or inequity may request an appeal by 5:00 p.m. on the last business day in February.  An application for an appeal of Choice Program eligibility must be submitted to the Office of College and Career Readiness, 402 Market Street, Savannah, GA 31408 or email amy.perry@sccpss.com or angie.lewis@sccpss.com, indicating the child’s program request, or program ineligibility. To download the SCCPSS Choice Program Appeal Application, click Application for Appeal. Appeals will be reviewed January 28 - February 23.

Is transportation provided for Choice programs? Yes, however, routes/stops may be longer than the ride within your attendance zone. Please check our website for information on the district’s transportation program.

Will the applications for Choice Programs be available on paper?
In addition to being online,
paper applications will be available only at school sites where a Choice Program is offered.   The Office of College & Career Readiness can provide assistance to accessing the online application, if needed, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on a first come, first served basis (402 Market Street, Savannah, GA 31408).  Please call 912-395-6765 to set up an appointment.  Completing applications online is strongly encouraged!

How many sites can I apply to for my child? Only one (1) application per child may be submitted containing up to three choice selections.

What documents do I need to complete the Choice Program lottery application?
The lottery process is fully automated for all students who are currently enrolled in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS). Once an SCCPSS parent submits the online lottery application, all eligibility criteria will be accessible electronically by the Choice Coordinator designated at each schools.  No additional documentation is needed.  

All applicants who are not currently enrolled in a Savannah-Chatham County Public School should apply online but must also submit required documentation to the SCCPSS Office of College and Career Readiness, 402 Market Street, Savannah, GA 31408.  ALL documentation should be received (through drop-off or US Mail) within five business days of online application completion.

Required documentation for Non-SCCPSS students includes:  Printed Choice Program Application (online print out), Transcript/Report Card (previous three semesters), Proof of Address (Utility Bill (electric, gas, water), Government Agency Mail, or Lease Agreement/Mortgage Statement), Required Test Scores

Where do I go to obtain standardize test scores and report cards?
Parents of students enrolled in SCCPSS should only complete the online application. The lottery is fully automated for parents and students who are currently enrolled in the school district. Students who are NOT currently enrolled in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System MUST obtain and deliver all required documents to the Office of College & Career Readiness within five business days of online application submission.

Can an application be disqualified from the process?  Yes. Submission of more than one application on the same child may result in disqualification.

What if I select three Choice Programs and I receive notification that I am only eligible for two choice selections?  If a student does not meet the criteria for their first choice, the second choice will be treated as the first choice, and the third choice will be treated as the second choice. Likewise, if the student is ineligible for the second choice, the third choice will be treated as the second choice. In other words, each subsequent choice after an ineligible choice will be bumped up so each student always has at least a first choice program for the lottery.

Can I apply for a Choice Program if I do not live in Chatham County?   You may apply; however, your child will not be seated until all Chatham County students have been seated. You will also be required to pay tuition and must reapply through the lottery each year.

Can I apply to any IB Program if I meet all requirements?  Student  assignment for the IB Programme will be determined by the Elementary Attendance Zone of any applicant.  Click here for more information.      

Does my current PreK student need to apply for the Choice School even if he/she currently attends the school? Yes, all current Pre-K students must apply for the Choice Program.

What happens if I miss the application window or I move into Savannah after the application window closes?    Families interested in a Choice Program that wish to apply after the lottery process is complete, can access an “After Lottery Application” online at choice.sccpss.com.  Late applications will place students on the schools’ waitlist in the order received upon eligibility criteria verification.  Out of County applicants and those students NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED (this includes out of county, home school, virtual school, and private school students) in Savannah-Chatham County Public School System must submit ALL required documents to the SCCPSS Office of College and Career Readiness, 402 Market Street, Savannah, GA 31408.  ALL documentation should be received (through drop-off or US Mail) within five business days of online application completion.  If space in the school or program becomes available, parents will receive notification.  Otherwise, the student is expected to enroll at their neighborhood school.  After Lottery Applications will be available beginning March 19, 2018.  The deadline for receiving After Lottery Applications will be June 15, 2018.  *Note:  These dates may change. 

Multiple Births

What do I do if I have twins, triplets, etc?  

Multiple births are defined as the birth of two or more offspring produced in the same gestation period-twins, triplets etc

Multiple births that use the same application form will be treated identically when determining eligibility. In other words, if one of the multiple births is not eligible, the other will not be eligible if they are on the same application.

  • Parents should include all names online (and on the same paper application) only if they desire all children to attend the same program.
  • Multiple births that use the same application form will be treated identically when determining eligibility.
  • Multiple births who applied on the same application will be treated together and will be seated or waitlisted sequentially. However, in the case where parents selected more than one Choice Program choice and the first student gets the final seat at a school the second or third sibling could end up on multiple waitlists, or seated at a different school than the first sibling.

How will I be notified?
An email will be sent to parents with their child’s placement. In addition, official written notices of acceptance or Waitlist status will be mailed.

Who will be running the lottery?
The district has contracted with a third party vendor to handle the lottery.

What if I do not have a computer, can I still use the online system to apply?
Applications will be accessible on our website at choice.sccpss.com starting January 6, 2018. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply online.  Computers will be available at the SCCPSS Student Success Expo, which will be held at the Savannah Mall from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., January 6, 2018.  Assistance will be available at the Expo to help with the application process.    The Office of College & Career Readiness can provide assistance to accessing the online application, if needed, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on a first come, first served basis (402 Market Street, Savannah, GA 31408).  Please call 912-395-6765 to set up an appointment.  Public computers are also available at any of the Chatham County Public Libraries.
