The following is an updated list of scholarship opportunities.  Scholarship listings will be updated to include additional local and regional awards.  As with college applications, students who need transcripts and letters of recommendation from the Counseling Office must give a minimum two weeks notice to ensure a timely turnaround process.

UNCF Scholarships – Search for hundreds of scholarships and grant programs administered by the United Negro Scholarship Fund as well as scholarships offered through other organizations.  If you are applying to an HBCU, this is a must!

Comcast Leaders and Achievers-SECHS will nominate one outstanding senior who has shown commitment to community service during his/her four years at SEC.

 

Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholar-Athlete Awards-awards given to local, state, and national levels of competitions. Highly competitive. Academic Achievement, Athletic Achievement, Community Impact.

AES Engineering Scholarship-$500 multiple awards. Essay between 500-1000 words.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship-50 awards of $5,000. For students who have demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity in their personal lives, financial need.

Coca-Cola Scholars-50 awards of $20,000 and 200 awards of $10,000. 1. Leadership in School 2. Commitment to Community 3. Academic Achievement 4. Part-time employment.

College Prowler “No Essay” Scholarship-$2,000. Fill out an online form. One winner is selected at random each month.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards-$1,000 with a chance to earn more. Students who have excelled in community service and/or leadership. Applications must be completed online and submitted to Mrs. Gordon-Jelks for review. Only one student is nominated from SEC.

Ron Brown Scholarship – At least ten awards of $10,000 per year for four years ($40,000).  Academically talented, highly motivated African American Students who are US citizens should apply.

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest-Various amounts. Applicants must submit a recorded essay (CD or cassette tape) 3-5 minutes in length on the topic, “Why Veterans are Important to Our Nation’s History & Future.”

First Freedom Student Competition-$750-$3,000. Must write an essay on a topic involving religious freedom and have a sponsoring teacher.

AXA Achievement Scholarship - 25,000.  Students who have ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for family and community, and the ability to achieve in college should apply.

Ronald McDonald House Scholarships-Students currently enrolled in high school who are eligible to attend an institution of higher learning or vocational/technical school with a complete course of study in the year immediately following graduation may apply for only one RMHC scholarship program.

            Additional Reminders:

 

ü One of the single best sources of scholarship money is the college or university to which you are applying. Many schools have scholarship deadlines much earlier than their regular decision admission date.

 

ü Please pay close attention to the financial aid and scholarship sections of your schools’ websites!
