Mrs. Jennifer West, Rice Creek School
TOTY 2018 & Top 5 Finalist for SCCPSS TOTY 2018
Mrs. Jennifer West has taught in Savannah Chatham County Public Schools for 13 years and she has taught for 3 years at Rice Creek School. Teaching was not on Mrs. West’s radar upon entering college at Georgia Southern University. She wanted to become a veterinarian. However, she changed majors from pre-veterinary medicine to psychology her sophomore year of college and then became more and more interested in working with young children in a school setting.
After her graduation in December of 2000, she worked with Pineland Mental Health in Statesboro, GA as a job trainer for adults with special needs for one year, then returned to graduate school at Georgia Southern University. In graduate school, she studied School Counseling and worked as a graduate assistant then a full-time employee in the Educational Talent Search Program at GSU.
Finally, in 2005, Mrs. West began teaching 2nd grade at R.W. Gadsden Elementary School in Savannah Chatham County Public Schools and has loved it ever since! Her work passions include: early childhood literacy, math, and science, building strong relationships with her students and parents, and helping students and families in need. She holds an Ed.S. degree in Brain-Based Teaching and Learning with an emphasis in Teacher Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
On a more personal note, Mrs. West has been happily married to her husband for 16 years and has a wonderful 10 year old son. She enjoys spending time with her little family and her close friends, reading books, crafting, decorating her home, traveling (especially camping), and cooking. She has a dog and a cat and still loves animals as much as she did in elementary school when she decided that she’d either be a ballerina or veterinarian. Her favorite children’s novel is Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery and she loves children’s literature! Currently, her favorite TV show is “This Is Us.”
Mrs. West was shocked to hear that she was Rice Creek School’s TOTY candidate and could not believe it when she heard her name called as a Top 5 Finalist for Chatham County’s TOTY. She feels completely humbled by this honor and hopes to make Rice Creek Cardinals proud. Go Cardinals!!!
