The Georgia Colony |
|
Georgia was the youngest of the 13
colonies. It was founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733. Our hometown, Savannah,
was the first city in Georgia. Georgia had a surprising number of poor
families—30% of the total white population. In 1733 Oglethorpe and a group of
more than 100 colonists arrived on the eastern coast of Georgia. They settled
at the mouth of the Savannah River. Oglethorpe designed Savannah, the
colony’s first settlement, with many small parks placed between blocks of
houses. Oglethorpe established friendly relations with Native Americans and
bought land for Savannah from them. Oglethorpe also encouraged settlers to
treat the Indians fairly. |
